Out And About
Gatehouse of Fleet and the surrounding area offers a wide range of activities for both the energetic and for those looking for a more relaxing kind of break. Each season has its own special charm – blankets of snowdrops in Cally Woods in January and February, a sea of bluebells in Castramont Wood in April and May and the amazing autumn colours later in the year.
The Bobbin is the ideal base for those looking to explore the area on foot or by bike with some excellent local walks and cycle tracks. We are ideally situated for Galloway Forrest Park – a designated dark skies park for those interested in the night sky – with its huge variety of wildlife and for some of the 7 Stanes mountain bike tracks.
With scenery ranging from craggy mountains, to the flood planes of the river, to ancient woodland and rocky shores, the wide range of habitats mean that the area teams with a great variety of flora, fauna and bird life. Red Squirrels are often seen both in the woods and in the garden and deer and otter are common sights. The Red Kite feeding station at Lauriston gives an amazing display of these beautiful birds every day and they have been seen over the town.
Other outdoor activities available in the area include fishing (permits can be bought locally), sailing on Loch Ken, golf and swimming.
Gatehouse and the surrounding area are seeped in history and there are plenty of castles and historic sites to visit – Cardoness Castle offers amazing views over the Fleet Estuary.
For those with an interest in art, the pretty little town of Kirkcudbright, an Artists Town, is only 8 miles away and has some lovely little Galleries. Castle Douglas is 14 miles from Gatehouse and as a designated “Food Town” offers plenty of opportunities to sample some of the best of Scottish food. In the other direction Wigtown is Scotland’s Book Town where you can browse through books for hours and further down the coast is the ancient site at Whithorn. And of course a sunny day on the beach would not be complete without a visit to Cream O Galloway on the way home to sample some of the best Ice Cream that there is!!
